8 reasons to visit the Hunter Valley this Winter

Unearth what it is to spend winter in the Hunter Valley, a glass in hand next to a roaring fire, seasonal flavours and quiet mornings. Take a moment to unwind and escape reality, reconnect with loved ones, and indulge in our renowned wine and food scene.

1. Fireside comforts

There’s nothing quite like the allure of a roaring fire to chase away the winter chill. With an array of restaurants boasting indoor fireplaces, cellar doors offering intimate fireside tastings, and accommodation where you can cosy up next to a fireplace, it’s fair to say the best place to be in the Hunter Valley this winter is right beside a fire.

2. Red wine tastings

As we welcome the new season, there’s no better time to be enjoying Hunter Valley reds. The Vintage 2023 Hunter Valley Shiraz has just been released, and with glowing reviews already rolling in, now’s your chance to taste it for yourself. Choose from seven curated wine and food trails, or jump on a tour to explore the legendary reds of the Hunter Valley, each crafted with its own unique story.

3. Vibrant winter dining scene

Winter dining here is anything but ordinary—think slow-cooked local produce, rich flavours, and wine pairings that bring the whole scene to life. There are new flavours, ingredients, and menus to be explored. From dining at a winery, to laid back cafes there’s something for every food lover.

4. Unforgettable events

From a special appearance by the one and only Miguel Maestre at the annual Hunter Valley Beer & Wine Festival, to intimate fireside tastings hosted by local winemakers, a bonfire food and wine event ranked among the top 50 wine experiences in the world, and a live performance by The Screaming Jets over the June Long Weekend, there is something for everyone this winter in the Hunter Valley.

5. The Ultimate time for R&R

Immerse yourself in a sanctuary of relaxation and rejuvenation at a Hunter Valley day spa. From invigorating massages to pampering facials and hydrotherapy sessions, every moment is crafted to nurture your bond and ignite your senses. Visit one of our many award-winning spas including The Spa at Château Élan, Ubika Spa at Rydges Resort, or Elysia Wellness Retreat Day Spa located within Oaks Cypress Lakes Resort. Or, book with Heavenly Hunter Massage for a personalised treatment in the comfort of your own accommodation.

6. The Hunter Valley Cheese trail

Home to several renowned cheese producers, you can easily spend half a day tastings award-winning artisan cheeses that perfectly complement our world-class wines. Start with Binnorie Dairy in Lovedale for cheeses so good, they’ve not only won a multitude of awards but also developed a cult-like following. Don’t miss their Marinated Feta, tangy Labna, and the unique Duetto. Next, head to The Smelly Cheese Shop in Pokolbin Village, known for its extensive selection of both Australian and imported cheeses. Highlights include their Truffle Triple Cream Brie, Smoked Cheddar, and a variety of blue cheeses like Roquefort and Stilton. Just up the road, you’ll find the Hunter Valley Cheese Factory Co. Be sure to try their award-winning Hunter Gold washed rind and classic Hunter Brie. Finally, explore Hunter Belle Cheese Room, offering a range of artisanal cheeses made from the milk of local Jersey cows. Their Blue Moon and Goldenbelle cheeses showcase the rich, nutty flavours the region is known for.

7. Winter sunrises from the sky

There's no better way to take in a spectacular winter sunrise than from a hot air balloon in the Hunter Valley. Enjoy panoramic views of the vineyards, olive grooves, and maybe even catch a glimpse of kangaroos hopping around. A true bucket-list experience! Check out Beyond Ballooning and Balloon Aloft for Hunter Valley sunrise hot air balloon rides, and remember to book in early.

8. Discover the Hunter Valley art scene

In a place so beautiful, creativity, arts and culture go hand in hand with wine and food culture. A sip of wine and you might feel inclined to explore your creative side with a gallery visit, culture walk, or art class. Marvel at the exhibitions at Singleton Arts & Cultural Centre and Maitland Regional Art Gallery, marvel at the contemporary art at Whatshed Gallery in the heart of the Hunter Valley, or visit Winmark Wines to explore their gallery and outdoor sculpture walk.
