A Hunter Valley revival sees the region

in pole position on NSW Wine Lists

In a recent report that is pleasing to all Australian winemakers, the Hunter Valley has taken over from New Zealand’s Marlborough wine region as the number one wine region represented on New South Wales wine lists with 7.8% of all listings, up 21% on last year.

In the latest Wine Business Solutions Wine On-Premise Report 2015 which reviews wine lists from all over Australia, listings from NSW Wines were up 6% on last year, being the only state to show growth. The Hunter Valley led this charge to become the ninth top Australian region listed on wine lists nationally, up 13.5% on last year.

The Hunter Valley, along with Orange were the only Australian wine regions showing growth on Australian wine lists at a time when Imported wines were up 37% on last year.

White wines from the Hunter Valley were the fourth most listed in the country with Semillon listings accounting for 13% growth, while Verdelho listings were up 7%. Interestingly total Chardonnay listings were down 19% however Hunter Valley Chardonnay listings were up 21% across wine lists nationally showing a revival for Hunter Valley Semillon, Verdelho and Chardonnay.

Shiraz listings were down nationally 21% in the wake of emerging and imported red wine varietals however Hunter Valley Shiraz rose an enormous 109% to become the fourth most listed Shiraz region on Australian wine lists. This can largely be attributed to the more interesting, medium weight, savory Shiraz styles produced in the Hunter Valley that works so well with food. Overall the Hunter Valley saw an increase in red wine listings of 45%.
