Bush Walking

Hunter Valley Wine Country is surrounded by a number of National Parks that make for excellent bushwalking.

Watagans National Park

The Watagans National Park covers 7,751 hectares of an extensive mountain range which provides many recreational opportunities, both in the national park and adjoining state forests.

In addition to a range of short walks associated with the various picni areas and lookouts, the Great North Walk crosses Watagans National Park en route from Sydney to Newcastle.

For more information visit the NSW National Parks website or contact the Visitor Information Centre for a brochure.

Werakata National Park

Werakata National Park is a small park located in the southeast corner of Hunter Valley Wine Country. The park has a rich history of Aborignal occupation and more recently forestry operation. Today it conserves a diversity of plants and animals including a number of threatened species and endangered ecological communities

It is the most easily accessible park in the area and can be reached within 5 minutes from the Visitor Information Centre. Enter the park via Lomas Lane off Wine Country Drive.

Enjoy a picnic at Astills Picnic Area and explore the Kurri Sand Swamp Woodland. A great way to see the park is by bicycle. One of the best routes is to depart from the picnic area, cycle north along Deadmans Trail and then return to the picnic area via Gibsons Road. The Forestry Hut off Old Maitland Road is one of the few remaining huts of this type and function and shows how forestry work was undertaken when transport was not as efficient as it is now.  A pretty, 3km walk is easily accessible from Astills Picnic Area  and makes for a nice morning or afternoon walk.

Three generations of Koori women, Nan Dear, her feisty daughter Gladys and Dolly, her clever teenage granddaughter live in a shack on a flood prone riverbank on the outskirts of a country town. For Nan, even life on ‘the Flats’ represents progress of a kind, but Gladys has bigger ambitions for a real house and a real job for Dolly. When Gladys takes on buying the Encyclopaedia Britannica from city salesman Errol Fisher to improve Dolly’s chances, their lives take an unexpected and challenging turn.

Set against the Queen’s visit in the 1950’s with music that evokes the period, this tender, funny, play celebrates the transformative power of learning and the fierce optimism of the women as they struggle for community acceptance in conservative, Menzies' era Australia.

Rainbow's End is a genuine 'feel good' night in the theatre. Written with gentle irony and humorous affection by Jane Harrison, the writer of the award winning play ‘Stolen’ and flawlessly directed by multi award winner Craig Ilott.
