A BIG WINE FOR A SMALL HUNTER PRODUCER

Boydells media release 2021 chardonnay

On Thursday evening at the KPMG Sydney Royal Wine Show, Boydell’s was awarded the top gong for Best Small Producer Wine of Show for its 2021 Boydell’s Reserve Chardonnay.

It’s the wine industry’s night of nights, where winemakers are recognised for quality at a Black-Tie affair amongst their peers. For Boydell’s, a small Hunter Valley producer making a terrific range of wines predominantly from their estate in a pretty corner of the valley, this win is huge.

Far from mainstream, Boydell’s with its superb Cellar Door – Restaurant in the heart of historic Morpeth, on the Hunter’s fringe, aim to produce high-quality, hand-crafted food and wine, and compliment those with incredible experiences and events.

A relative newcomer to the wine game, Boydell’s was established by Jane and Daniel Maroulis in 2017 having purchased the stunning Boydell’s property in East Gresford in 2015 where they relocated from Narromine to raise their young family. The Boydell’s property is thought to be the very first vineyard planting in the Hunter Valley, when it was settled by Welshman Charles Boydell in 1826. The land was documented to have grown all sorts of popular commodities but mostly wine and tobacco and were apparently sought after for their unrivalled quality. Replanted in 1997, the vineyard produces some of the best fruit in the Hunter.

Hands on when it comes to making their wine, Jane and Daniel entrust the final blend with renowned winemaker Liz Silkman, known to many as the “Chardonnay Queen”, and is the reigning Hunter Valley Winemaker of the Year. “We couldn’t be more proud of our young and small brand being named Best Small Producer Wine of Show, especially at Sydney Royal. While we nurture the vineyard and brand and are with her every step of the way, it’s Liz Silkman we thank for putting her all into this wine. She’s maintained the integrity of the fruit, letting it shine, but she’s created something really special for us with our Chardonnay style which consistently delivers year after year. We couldn’t be more grateful of having Liz as our winemaker, she not only shares the Boydell’s values, goals and uncompromising standards, but she treats our wines as she would hers.” Says Jane Maroulis.

Production is small, allowing Boydell’s to create a sustainable future for the vineyard and the ability to ensure that every bottle from vine to table is consistent, and of the best possible quality.

2021 Boydell’s Reserve Chardonnay RRP $45 is available online at boydells.com.au and at Cellar Door, open Thursday to Sunday.
