UNCORKED AVALON MASTERCLASS | TAMBURLAINE ORGANIC WINES
Tamburlaine was established in 1966 by Dr Lance Allen. In 1985 the winery was purchased by a small group of friends and relatives led by Managing Director and Chief Winemaker, Mark Davidson. Mark has built his long-term winemaking philosophy based on modern organic practices, both in the vineyard and the winery. After challenging years of research and development, the company enjoys now an enviable position as Australia’s largest producer of organic wines.'
AARON MERCER
Aaron Mercer has been Senior Winemaker at Tamburlaine Organic Wines since 2016 after returning from three years working on the Californian Central Coast where he was the custodian of fruit from Monterey to Santa Barbara, including the famed company vineyards of Bien Nacido and Solomon Hills. This role exposed Aaron to a range of wine styles and markets across the US.
Born and bred in the Hunter, he studied at the University of Newcastle from 2000-2004 majoring in environmental sustainability, biological farming and ecological management.
During this time, he began working at Scarborough Winery in the Hunter Valley in all aspects of the business; from Cellar Door sales to routine vineyard work, driving tractors, scrubbing tanks, fruit picking and so on. Aaron says that this time was invaluable in developing his holistic understanding of the wine industry.
After gaining experience with a number of Hunter Valley producers, including Tyrrells and Brokenwood, Aaron moved to South Australia in 2010 to complete his Postgraduate degree in Oenology at the University of Adelaide, where he was exposed to cutting edge winemaking technology and research. Once returning to the Hunter Valley, he received the Alasdair Sutherland scholarship in 2012, an award which cultivates wineshow judging talent.
