McGuigan Gets the Gold at the International Wine Challenge

McGuigan Wines has once again secured top honours in the United Kingdom at one of the world’s most prestigious wine competitions – the 2015 International Wine Challenge (IWC).

The makers of Australia’s number one selling bottled red wine* received nine Gold, five Silver and 18 Bronze medals across its portfolio, with the critically-acclaimed The Shortlist and BIN Series ranges receiving the most recognition.

The Gold medals were as follows;

  • 2010 McGuigan Shortlist Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 2004 McGuigan Shortlist Riesling
  • 2008 McGuigan Shortlist Riesling
  • 2013 McGuigan Shortlist Riesling
  • 2012 McGuigan Handmade Shiraz
  • 2003 McGuigan BIN 9000 Semillon
  • 2005 McGuigan BIN 9000 Semillon
  • 2014 McGuigan The Shortlist Semillon
  • 2006 McGuigan Vineyard Select Semillon

The 2015 medal announcement shows an increase on the 2014 IWC results, which saw McGuigan Wines take away four Gold, nine Silver and nine Bronze for its white varietals only.

The IWC is one of the world’s largest, and most prestigious, blind tasting competitions. Wines are tasted and assessed by a panel of industry experts with complete objectivity. That is, on the taste and quality of the wine only - the winery name, grape variety and country of origin is not known by the panel at the time of tasting.

Commenting on the win, Chief Winemaker for McGuigan Wines, Neil McGuigan, said; “This year, we have seen greater diversity in our medal recognition at the IWC. Not only did our coveted Hunter Valley Semillon receive multiple awards, but our Shortlist Cabernet Sauvignon (Coonawarra) and Handmade Shiraz (Langhorne Creek) shone for the judges and picked up Gold.

“I’m immensely proud of what we continue to produce and achieve.  Our consistent award wins have proven we deserve to be on the world stage, and it’s up to the other Australian winemakers to get out there, pound the pavement and back their products to ensure the message about our country’s wine quality is received loud and clear”, finished McGuigan.

Following the latest announcement and a host of recent international acclaim, McGuigan Wines can now be considered one of the world’s most highly awarded wine producers in recent history.  In addition to three White Winemaker of the Year awards, the last six years has seen McGuigan Wines named International Winemaker of the Year and Australian Producer of the Year at the equally prestigious International Wine & Spirits Challenge (IWSC) in 2009, 2011 and 2012.
